How Do I Make Absinthe?

Absinthe is a mythical, mysterious drink and many people want to know “How do I make Absinthe?”, the drink favored by the likes of Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Oscar Wilde and commonly known as the Green Fairy or La Fee Verte.

There are three main ways to make Absinthe yourself at home:-

1. Distilling Absinthe using herbs or steeping herbs in alcohol without distillation.

2. Using a herbal blend kit.

3. Using an Absinthe essence.

How Do I Make Absinthe by Distillation or Steeping?

Distilling Absinthe liquor at home is not to be recommended and is actually illegal in many countries, including the United States, unless you have a license. Absinthe is made by distilling herbs like wormwood, green aniseed, anise and fennel with an alcohol base and then adding extra herbs like lemon balm, petite wormwood and hyssop to color the liquor.

To use the steeping method, you need to mix wormwood with a neutral alcohol (vodka or Everclear) and let the mixture steep for up to 2 weeks in a cool dark place. Filter out the wormwood and then add other classic Absinthe herbs such as aniseed, fennel, anise, hyssop, angelica and lemon balm. Leave for a few days, filter and then taste.

Making Absinthe by steeping herbs and filtering will not make a proper Absinthe because you are not distilling the drink.

How Do I Make Absinthe Using A Herbal Blend Kit?

There are many different companies online selling Absinthe kits including the company Green Devil. Their kit makes a very strong Absinthe with a thujone content of up to 90mg per liter, much more than commercial Absinthe and vintage Absinthes. Thujone is a chemical found in wormwood which was thought to cause psychedelic effects. Studies have shown that thujone is only dangerous if consumed in large quantities.

The Green Devil kit provides you with an Absinthe herbal blend to mix with alcohol, an Absinthe finishing blend and a micron filtration system to filter the liquor. No distillation is required so this will not make a true Absinthe.
